Reiki for Beginners: How It Works and What to Expect

What is Reiki?

Reiki is energy healing that originated in Japan many years ago to reduce stress, aid relaxation, and promote healing. When a Reiki Practitioner administers Reiki and is trained in the healing art of energy, gentle hand movements are used at various positions, allowing energy to flow freely without limitations. The hand positions are a series of techniques known as "laying on the hands." Hands-on healing energy is where the practitioner typically places their hands on or near the client's head, throat, chest, abdomen, knees, and feet to release blocked energy. Based on the energy passing from the practitioner to the client, the client's needs meant removing blockages, relieving stress, tension, and pain, and lessening anxiety.

What happens during a Reiki session?

During a Reiki session, the client will lie on their back on the massage table fully clothed; your Reiki Practitioner will place their hands on you or just above your body in a specific location associated with energy locations known as Chakras, aiding in balancing the energy flow and releasing blockages or negative energy. As the practitioner releases the blockages or negative energy, the client will usually feel a sense of comfort and relaxation. The space used for a Reiki session usually has a spa-like atmosphere with soft music playing in the background. A typical Reiki session can last anywhere from 40-90 minutes.

What can I expect to feel during a Reiki session?

Everyone's experience is uniquely different and subjective to the person's emotions. At times, the person will feel the hands of the Reiki Practitioner being warm, pulsating tiny vibrations, while other times refreshingly cool. Sometimes, people feel a sense of consciousness that heightens their consciousness, becoming more aware of the place and time. Sometimes, people fall into a deep state of sleep associated with being in a meditative state. The most common experience people have for the first time is the release of stress, feelings of relaxation, and potentially less pain.

How will I feel after a Reiki session?

Reiki treats the whole person from body, mind, emotions, and spirit, which benefits the client's relaxation, comfort, peace, and overall well-being. Reiki is a simple, natural, safe method of spiritual healing that promotes self-improvement and overall well-being.

How often should someone receive Reiki?

For those new to Reiki, scheduling a treatment session every one to two weeks aids in balancing one's energies, releasing blockages, and developing a positive energy flow. It's also a good idea to eat a balanced diet. By encompassing a healthy diet that includes protein, plenty of water, and enough rest, the client can develop a sense of harmony within themselves, creating a sense of peace and unity. Accountability for daily activity and lifestyle choices is up to the client, but the results are noticeable when the client chooses to prioritize healthy habits.

While the effects of a Reiki treatment vary, regular monthly sessions promote overall balance and maintain positive energy flow, resulting in an active commitment to improving oneself and promoting harmony with others.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. Reiki is not dependent on belief and will work regardless of your premises. Reiki is a gift from God or a spiritual belief system that touches an intellectual concept, aiding the practitioner's and client's physical, mental, and spiritual belief systems. Many clients feel that their spirituality becomes heightened, making them more aware of their belief system. Reiki has no contraindications; it is safe and gentle. Reiki has no physical manipulation; nothing is ingested or applied to the skin. Reiki sessions are a natural holistic practice that supports healing, increases feelings of well-being, and is used as complementary approaches to holistic health practices.

What kind of conditions is Reiki known to promote healing?

Reiki has long been known to assist with stress reduction, reduce muscle tension, and improve a client's overall health. Clients have sought Reiki treatments for stress and anxiety, PTDS, depression, difficulty sleeping, pain reduction, removing toxins, and balancing emotions along with energy fields. Using Reiki in conjunction with medical treatments, holistic therapies, or alternative therapies such as massage and chiropractic services has provided comfort and improved overall health.

Is there a situation where Reiki shouldn't be used?

While Reiki cannot hurt you, Reiki should not be administered in some situations. The art of energy healing, Reiki, should not be practiced by the practitioner when sick. This rule of thumb is related to the energy itself. When the practitioner is ill, the power will seek out the one who is sick, offering healing properties to that individual. Still, the client may not be able to benefit much from the treatment. It's best practice to reschedule the client's session.

Never administer or receive Reiki if the person has a broken bone before a medical doctor has time to set the fracture correctly. The client will benefit from a Reiki session after the bone set, lessening the pain and adding energy-healing properties. This practice ensures that the energy administered doesn't cause the fracture to grow together incorrectly.
